Missouri has passed the state amendment to add doula coverage for Medicaid members!

MO HealthNet Doula Experience and Qualifications

Required minimum qualifications of doulas to enroll with MO HealthNet are:

•Be at least 18 years old
•Must hold liability insurance as an individual or through a doula supervising organization
•Possess a current certificate issued by a national or Missouri-based doula training organization

The doula training organizations currently recognized by the State of Missouri as meeting the curriculum standards are listed below:

•Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA) International

•Jamaa Birth Village / Okunsola’s Community Doula Training

•Virtuous Doula Training Academy

If you are a certified doula that does not have a certificate issued by a national or Missouri-based doula organization, you must be registered and listed on the public roster of the Missouri Community Doula Council or the Missouri Doula Association.

Missouri lists the following as required training for doulas to be approved for Medicaid reimbursement:

Understanding a doula’s role, including
– breastfeeding support
– perinatal mood and anxiety disorders
– anticipatory care strategies
– cultural competency
– how to deliver perinatal education and support
– how to increase client autonomy during birth
– how to support clients who may need additional care

Understanding the importance of health-related social needs, including
– navigation of social services
– trauma-informed care
– strategies specific to the community served

Certification is attained after evaluation by a birth professional or trainer, indicating that the student has completed the training program and be deemed competent to provide doula services.

Here are some of the things you will need to be a Medicaid provider:

  • NPI Number
  • Liability insurance*
  • Make sure your certification is up to date
  • Some of the managed care companies require you to have an active profile on CAQH.
  • Some of the managed care companies require you to have an account with Availity.
  • The managed care companies may require you to be CPR certified.
  • The managed care companies may require you to have HIPAA compliance training.
